From a distance….

July 22, 2006

Molweni!  I hope this finds everyone well…. everyone here is going strong!    We can’t wait to see everybody.  Today, we went and bought that man at the new village his three sheets of tin for his shop.

While we were there, we saw the woman who was contemplating the abortion and all she could talk about was her future.  She is taking her vitamins, going to the health clinic and tomorrow she is having her first ‘scan’ of the baby.   All she could do was smile and talk about the baby.   She has a long road ahead of her but God is capable of all things and I wish i was going to be here to see what He does with this new life that was almost taken away.

In the afternoon, i took sister and norenti out to lunch and then took them home to Motherwell.   We really enjoyed ourselves and we had a good laugh watching all the white folks (there were only white people) look and point at us.  Being so close to the end of the apartide, everyone thinks that i am their ‘boss’.  The people in the restaurant were so intrigued that they just couldn’t help themselves and kept looking.  I was sitting on the opposite side of sister and norenti so i decided to pull my chair around right next to them instead.  We all started to laugh.   We had a great meal and then we walked to the nearest gas station and we bought, what else but chocolate… yummy.

I heard a song today by bette midler called ‘from a distance’.   A few lines in there said ‘from a distance the world looks blue and green…. From a distance there is harmony’.  I thought of all that is going on here and thought maybe one day, there will be peace.  That song also reminded me that ‘God is watching us’…. That is so true.  I would never claim to do things right all the time, not even most of the time, no one does.  But the one thing we can all do is try to follow what has been placed in our hearts to do and not let fear stomp it out.  It could be God’s prompting and He is watching what we do for His kingdom.

Tomorrow i am taking the girls shopping  and i have to buy a skirt.  The man that lives in the field across the way from us (lives in the shack where the mom and baby died two months ago) said he wants a picture of me and him but he wants me to wear a skirt… J  he said he wants to see me wear a skirt to church…. So, i will go buy one since i didn’t bring any… i think that is such a funny request.  Some of you may be thinking he is perverted, but it is a culture thing here.  All the women wear skirts.  He calls me the doctor and he said ‘the doctor must wear a skirt on Sunday and i want a picture with her’…. So, i will try to find one…

the new boy is sooo funny and of course attached to the boys at the hip.  he is a typical boy.  he runs everywhere and has his hands on everything and talks non-stop.  He has been chasing the chickens everyday and now some of them are losing feathers from stress….haha.  He found some eggs and broke them all on a rock and loves to take my brush and pretend it is a weapon.   The boys are his favorite ‘play thing’ and they love it too.   i wish you all could see joseph and james shine.

    Hey guys,
We talked to your dad and Coty tonight and they said you’ll be home in about a week and then you’re going to spend some time with them. This is the first time we have been to your website. We looked at the pictures and read some of the stories but we’ll have to read the rest later because it’s getting too late here. It’s Shawn writing to you but Andy, MacKenzie and Kris are here reading as I write. We’ll be eager to hear your stories and see all the pictures you’ve taken during your time there. I’m sure we’ll post more comments as we read more of your stories but for now, we’ll have to say good night and see you when you get back to Kansas City.

Thes pictures are great and once again only add to the amazing stories that are so well written that I have a picture in my mind as I read.

I pondered for several days in praise of Jesus about the negative test results. Sometimes it might be tempting not to believe in the power of prayer or think, as Bette says and so many believe, that God is watching us “from a distance.” I know that you were, and have been all along, indicating that the opposite is true… that God is up close and personal. Everything in the Bible indicates that God wants there to only ever be one set of footprints in the sand. I am learning that the abundant life is truly when we look at an accomplishment and know that God was in it from beginning to end, and my favorite thing in the world is when people ask me about it and I can point to our amazing and loving God. I have come to a place in my life where I simply don’t want to do it any other way because it is empty. Thank you so much for expressing this and by being transparent for Christ, even though you are “just a girl from Kansas”… Christ is magnified! How amazing it is for me, from a distance, to see that so clearly in your life. You mentor me greatly!

I thought about how God knew all along the woman who would sleep better because of the medicine you bought, the little girl whose last days were blessed with the comfort and compassion of Jesus because you chose to be transparent for Him and follow His calling in your life, and the many, many, many more lives you have directly and indirectly impacted in the past almost 3 months. God’s vision, plan, and purpose is mind blowing. He is awesome!

Thanks so much for your faithful blog up-dates and the beautiful way you write what your heart feels. Every single up-date has been a gift and blessing!

    Love,
    Nat, Andy, and Grant

How cool it that? What a difference those three sheets of tin made in this man’s life! Way to go Joseph, James and Jen! Hard to believe that your trip will conclude in the coming week. As I look back on all of the amazing things that you have accomplished I am certain that the good byes will not be easy! Chin up girl! Stay strong and keep doing the work that God has sent you there to do!For it is He that has brought you here and it is He that will bring you through it! Sounds like you have an admirerer int he man that wnats his picture with you in a skirt! That is funny!I hope that your final days will be filled with laughter and fun as you try to figure out how you will ever live without these wonderful people that have touched you in so many ways as you have touched them. I am sure that this will not be your last trip to this country in need of your help! Look forward to hearing all about it and seeing all of the pictures!
    Peace!

Hi Jen, well it’s hard to believe you guys are starting your last week in SA. You have done many wonderful things during your stay not the least of which is showing your love and caring for the people in SA. They will miss all of you very much, and they know you will miss them too. It looks as if you guys will have a rousing homecoming as well you should. Obviously there are a large number of people here that will be thrilled to have you back home. It’sood that you will have some down time when you return. The demand on your time by family and friends will ease the transition. Have a good day and stay safe.

  9. Dennis Says:

    Jen,
I’ve been keeping up with all your updates, check it couple of times a week. I never know what to say, I’m always blown away by everything that you guys have done and been through. You have done some much over there and have not only helped, but touch the hearts of some people, they will never forget you. I’m sure leaving them will be hard, but remember, you will now be in their hearts for ever. Very few people today, don’t even take the time to think about what it takes to make a difference in someone life, let alone do it. Even if you fine a few things that you wished you would have done, and I’m sure you will, just remind yourself of all that you have helped and what a wonderful experince you have given your boys. Your boys will be better off for it. You have an amazing family.

I pray that your last days there are safe ones and that you and the boys have a safe trip home.

  10. Transition Man Says:

    Hey Jen,

I know you’re getting ready to head home and start your life again. Of course, like everyone on the blog, and all of your wonderful family and friends, I am proud of you too. Here’s what I think is so amazing about you (and I haven’t known you for that long) but I think it’s unbelievable how many of your projects started because you just walked by, noticed a need, and decided to help. You focused on helping, and it didn’t have to be medical related, it didn’t have to have major impact, or whatever. Village in the trees needs an English teacher–hey, we can make that happen. Man needs a roof? You found a Home Depot.

Hey that picture in the skirt…uh, you’re going to put that on the blog right? :) If not, maybe…well, we’ll talk.

OK–enough…this is a Christian blog and I am ruining it, I apologize everyone.

Well Jen, I hope your “transition” back to nursing is successful. That’s dumb, of course it will be. I pray you get the job you want though, a little break (maybe a big break) and a peace of mind that you did good over there.

    SM

  11. Mike Says:

    Jennifer and boys,
Don’t know if you’ll get this before you leave but just wanted to take one last opportunity to say that your messages are truly great and inspiring. Hope your last couple days in SA go well. From what I read from you and all your friends and family who respond to your blogs, I know that you’ve done amazing things and you and the boys will forever be proud of what you’ve done. Congratulations and thank you for representing so many of us so well. Can’t wait to see you and hear more stories from you. Travel safe and God bless you always,
    Mike

  12. Anna Christine Says:

All 3 of you have worked feverishly and it appears that you will be doing so right up until the time you leave.
Have a wonderful last few days there and the Kids and I are praying for your safe travel back.
Tell mamma and all that we have loved getting to know them and are praying for all of them. Give Phulamni (sp?) our love and support.
    with love to you
Anna Christine, Katie, Molly and Sam
