Good weekend – pictures added
June 19, 2006
Hi again. We survived the weekend… it was busy but fun. Friday Daniel and i took Phumlani to clean off his mother’s grave. It took us quite a while to find her. As we looked (to Phumlani’s best recollection) we couldn’t find her grave and Phumlani was getting more and more obvious with his anticipation of finding her. We stopped for a while and then… eight palm trees down (four past the path in the road) and directly behind two nicer and stronger grave markers, was Phumlani’s mom’s grave. He looked up close to make sure it was her. We scraped away the rocks that covered her birthday and her date of death. Then he used a shovel to scoop away some weeds that were growing up through the rocks.

Phumlani said the only other time he had been to see her grave was when he had a fight with his grandmother and he thought it was best to take a walk and he ‘walked straight to her, without even knowing where she was, but i remember she is behind a bigger grave marker’.
The sight of watching a boy clean off his mother’s grave was a humbling one. He was visibly upset but very focused on paying his respects and cleaning her grave. The panic of him thinking he wasn’t going to find her was enough to break my heart. But he got it done and he breathed a sigh of relief on the way home.
Saturday some people from the local church came out and tilled the garden and planted some cabbage, carrots, peas and i think beans? But mostly it was a relaxing day. Sunday I took the younger girls to one church and Daniel took the older girls to the another church (one with a youth group).
The other garage dwellers and I are getting really good at learning to juggle many things together like showering so not all the hot water is used, getting ready by flashlight so not to wake up everyone else, washing our clothes in turn and brushing our teeth in turn… Daniel and i are working very well together with keeping gas in the cars (he likes to drive them until they are sucking fumes, he claims he learned that from his dad), taking turns driving the kids everywhere, looking for the keys to the cars, whose music we will listen to and compromising on whose turn it is to use the computer.

Phumlani is loving his job still and gets paid this Friday!! Yea.
My boys are doing great and have narrowed down how they want to spend there missions money. They found a family (family with the boy whose mom died a few weeks ago) that they want to visit and figure out what they can buy the boys in family. Joseph has already given away a pair of his socks because the boy only has one pair. He thinks we might want to buy some clothes and maybe some blankets. I will keep you posted on what they come up with. I am so proud.
I love you all and can’t wait to hear from you guys.
Lots of love,Jen, joseph and james

Jennifer, is this the offending rooster?

Hi, well I thought you had dropped off the face of the earth. Funny how the imagination can get carried away when you don’t hear from someone for days when they are so far away. Happy to hear your weekend was so good. I can only try to imagine what Phumlani was feeling when you guys were looking for his mother’s grave….pretty heart-wrenching. I just keep thinking how lucky all of them are that you are there. You are bringing them so much joy. Cheers, the Royals won yesterday. One more win and they will have won 20 games so far. They have the worst record in baseball…and the season is just a little more than a third over…it’s going to be a long summer for baseball fans. Baseball seems so insignificant when I think about everything you’re doing. You take care and stay safe. Alex

Hi Jen and boys! Good to hear about your weekend! All the same things going on here, heat & humidity, little league baseball and oh yes, still NO puppies! We anticipate them any time now… but I keep reminding myself what D.C. said last Sunday, “God is never later, but He’s never early either!” So we wait and wait.
Caleb’s team still hasn’t won a game yet James! Joshua can fill you in on his team… (psst – 1 and 9 I think…) There has been lots of ’scootering’ around the ‘hood here the last few days and Caleb made and sold brownies at the end of the drive way on Saturday to raise some $$ to help pay for our broken van window… He even got a few mercy donations! And a few requests for future baked goods!
We put together some vitamins (thanks to Price Chopper at K7 and Johnson Dr. for the discount!) and some taco spices to send with the team who leave Kansas tomorrow to come join you. I hope they weigh their bags before they get to the airport so we don’t cause any extra baggage fees!! Vesta also assembled some recipe spices that only require a very few additional ingredients for a meal and they smell wonderful! Hopefully customs doesn’t think those baggies seem suspicious… hmmmmm….. And we included a few other things for you to distribute however you decide.
We continue to pray that you are being protected and that God blesses you and the work of your hands daily!

Hey — Did Daniel ever get his luggage? Was everything still there or is he still wearing your clothes?
Oh yes, to correct the typo above:
“God is never late, but He’s never early either”
thank you D.C. for that reminder…

Love reading your blog – that is till you start taking my name in vain and attributing my son’s careless treatment of your car’s gas tank to some pattern I passed on to him. ouch. that hurt. it’s true too. I’ve got to go fill up my old truck for the 2 mile trip home. I doubt there is enough gas in it to make it all the way there.
Praying for you all!

Hi sweetie! Please read your e-mail and respond to my question! I need a response.
I’m glad you had a peaceful weekend, and managed to help Phumlani. Our Peacock Man has now also left us, on Saturday. His place looks sad with no animals around.
Love, M

Hi Jennifer and James and Joe!
Hope I’ve done this right.
WOW! What an incredible journey you are having. It has been so moving to read about your experiences. Your pictures make it so easy for all of us here to feel connected to you. Thank you. You are truly a God given gift to everyone there.
You are so blessed to have James and Joe there with you. The smiles on their faces speak volumes!
I remember one day this spring, I had been teaching at CCE and James walked home with me. He told me all about the trip and was so excited. It was fun to listen to him and I wondered how many of us would have children that would be so ready and willing to go and do what you are doing. It is clear by the smiles on your faces that you are exactly where you should be. One of my favorite pictures is of Phumlani standing so proudly, in his work uniform. What an amazing young man.
Of course I would love to hear how school is going for the boys. What subjects do they have? Homework? what is the school day like?
(James, I promise to have skittles for you when you come home.)
We miss all three of your smiles in the neighborhood but are so proud of all of you. Stay safe and know that you are in our prayers.

Hello Jennifer, James and Joseph…I am one of the interns living in your house. I wanted you to know that the stories on this blog are so encouraging. (And we’re taking good care of your house too…)(And, contrary to Michelle’s belief, Scott is not working us too hard–we love every minute of it!) We can’t wait to meet you all! Blessings! –Jennifer

I can’t imagine how scared Phumlani must have been when he couldn’t find the grave. After all he’s been through, all he’s seen his mother go through, my heart was pounding just reading about it. Then, tears of joy to know he found it and was able to do this small thing for her and himself. Thank you God. The journey this young man has taken in just one month is phenominal. I can’t wait to read more.
Thanks for the pictures, too. They really help us get a perspective.
We love you guys so much and miss you, too. You are all doing a terrific job.
God Bless,
Joe, Hope, Paige, Josh, Emma

Jennifer,
You are missed in the neighborhood, I don’t have any new runners to wave to. I have to admit I have always been conservative when it comes to certain things like wasting food is a big deal to me etc. It is no secret that the USA has plenty of waste, but your words and photos make me look around and just shake my head. At the Clear Creek get together the fire dept came and let the hydrant spray for about one hour. I think some of the neighbors think I am really nuts for commenting on the waste of that water. I know we must enjoy what we have and not take it for granted. I also thought of you as I dropped off a perscription at Dillons….the girl just looked at me and said…”it’s going to be about 10 minutes, is that ok?”…..I thought wow, if you could just say that to the children who need the meds there…
PS You shine in your pics and I think that is just plain ol goodness from your heart.
You are living ALOHA.
